Best graphics card for 1440p gaming (2026)

For most 1440p gamers, the Radeon RX 9070 is the best pick: it reaches 60 FPS at High in 193 of our 210 games and has 16 GB of video memory. The RTX 5070 is the NVIDIA choice at the same launch price, and the RX 9060 XT 16GB is the best card for a smaller budget.

Check your processor first in the bottleneck calculator: at 1440p a slow processor still caps FPS in many games, and a cheaper card may give you the same result.

Estimated FPS from the FPSVibe model with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and 32 GB of RAM, so the card is the limit as far as possible. "Median" is the typical game of all 210; light games such as Valorant run far higher, the heaviest far lower.

Warzone stops at 176 FPS on the fastest cards: there the processor is the limit, even a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Black Myth: Wukong is the heaviest game here; with upscaling (Quality mode) the mid-range cards pass 60 FPS. See DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS for how much each mode adds.

Our picks explained

Best overall: Radeon RX 9070. About as fast as the RTX 5070 (121 vs 118 FPS in the typical game) at the same launch price, with 16 GB of video memory instead of 12 GB. It runs 193 of our 210 games at 60+ FPS at 1440p High, and 175 at Ultra. FSR 4 upscaling works on it.

Best NVIDIA: GeForce RTX 5070. Nearly the same speed as the RX 9070, with DLSS 4 and DLSS Frame Generation, which many demanding games support. Its 12 GB is enough at 1440p in every game we have data for except one at Ultra.

Best budget: Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB. The cheapest card that runs most games at 1440p High above 60 FPS (171 of 210), with 16 GB of video memory, so textures won't be the problem. The RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is about 3% faster and costs more at launch; pick it if you want DLSS.

Lowest cost: Intel Arc B580. 12 GB of memory at the lowest launch price here, and 60+ FPS at 1440p High in 129 of our 210 games, more with upscaling. Turn on Resizable BAR in the BIOS and pair it with a reasonably modern processor (Ryzen 5 5600 or Core i5-12400 class and newer).

High refresh rate: RX 9070 XT or RTX 5070 Ti. For 144 Hz and faster monitors. The RX 9070 XT is within about 2% of the RTX 5070 Ti in the typical game for $150 less at launch.

RTX 5080 and above: mostly for 4K. The RTX 5080 is only about 6% faster than the RTX 5070 Ti in the typical game at 1440p, because the processor becomes the limit in more games, and the RTX 5090 adds about 10% more for twice the launch price. Buy these for 4K or 240 Hz screens.

Put any two side by side: RTX 5070 vs RX 9070, RX 9070 XT vs RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5060 Ti 16GB vs RX 9060 XT 16GB.

Why not an 8 GB card for 1440p?

8 GB cards such as the RTX 5060 and the RX 9060 XT 8GB are fast enough for 1440p at Medium to High in many games (a median of 79–85 FPS at High). The problem is memory: of the 38 games where we know the video-memory need, 10 may need more than 8 GB at 1440p High and 19 at Ultra, where they can stutter. With 12 GB that drops to none at High and one at Ultra. Details are in how much VRAM you need.

If you already have an 8 GB card, it's fine for 1440p: use High instead of Ultra textures and turn on upscaling in demanding games.

Check before you buy

  1. Processor: the numbers above use a fast processor. Check your own pair in the bottleneck calculator, or run the FPS calculator with your exact parts.
  2. Power supply: the RX 9060 XT 16GB and RTX 5060 Ti 16GB use 160–180 W; the RX 9070 and RTX 5070 220–250 W; the RX 9070 XT and RTX 5070 Ti about 300 W. Check the card maker's recommended power supply and connectors.
  3. Case size: measure the space for the card's length and thickness.
  4. Your monitor: 1440p at 144 Hz or more is where the mid-range cards shine; at 60 Hz the budget cards are enough.

What is the cheapest good card for 1440p?

The Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB runs 171 of our 210 games at 60+ FPS at 1440p High. The Arc B580 costs less and reaches 60 FPS in 129, more with upscaling.

Is the RTX 5070 good for 1440p?

Yes. It averages about 118 FPS in the typical game at 1440p High in our estimates, and its 12 GB of video memory is enough there in every game we have data for except one at Ultra.

Is 8 GB of VRAM enough for 1440p?

For Medium and High in many games, but not all: 10 of the 38 games with a known need may want more than 8 GB at 1440p High. Choose 12–16 GB for a new card.

Do I need a fast processor for 1440p?

Less than at 1080p, but it still matters in fast shooters and big open worlds. Check your processor and card together in the bottleneck calculator before you upgrade.
