How the FPS calculator works

Every graphics card and processor has a performance index. Every game has two numbers: how much graphics power it needs for 60 FPS at 1080p High, and how heavy it is on the processor.

The calculator works out the FPS your graphics card can draw and the FPS your processor can feed, then takes the lower of the two. Resolution and quality presets scale the graphics side; too little RAM costs about 30%. That's it: simple, honest and explained in full on our methodology page.

FPS calculator FAQs

How accurate is the FPS estimate?

It's a ballpark, not a benchmark. For typical PCs on current drivers, expect real results within roughly ±25%. Game patches, upscaling (DLSS, FSR), ray tracing and laptop power limits can move numbers a lot.

Why is my processor the limit in some games?

Each game needs a certain amount of processor work per frame. If your processor can't prepare frames as fast as the graphics card can draw them, the processor sets the cap, and lowering graphics settings won't help much.

What is a good FPS for gaming?

30 FPS is playable for story, strategy and co-op games. 60 FPS feels smooth and is a good target for most games. Competitive shooters feel best at 120 FPS or more on a high-refresh monitor. Read more about good FPS.

Does RAM affect FPS?

Mostly when you have too little. Below a game's RAM need, our model cuts FPS by about 30% to reflect stutter and loading hitches. Above it, more RAM adds little; 16 GB covers most games today.

Will this work on a laptop?

Yes. Integrated graphics such as Intel Iris Xe or Radeon 780M are in our list. Laptop versions of desktop cards (for example an RTX 4060 Laptop GPU) are matched to the desktop card, and usually run 10-30% slower. See how to check your laptop's gaming specs.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Detect my PC reads the graphics card name your browser shares; nothing is sent to us.
