Is my laptop good for gaming? Laptop GPU tiers explained

Your laptop is good for gaming if it has a dedicated graphics chip at RTX 4050 Laptop level or better: that tier runs most games at 1080p at 60 FPS on Medium or High. Integrated graphics such as the Radeon 780M handle lighter games and esports, and the chip's power limit (TGP) can matter as much as its name.

Find your chip in the tiers below; if you don't know it yet, Detect my PC on the home page can usually read it, or see how to check your laptop's gaming specs.

Laptop graphics on FPSVibe are their own records, measured against desktop cards in published laptop reviews, never the desktop card of the same name. All of them are ranked on the laptop graphics page.

What each tier means:

  • Integrated: esports games (Valorant, Counter-Strike 2, League of Legends) and older or lighter games at 1080p Low to Medium. See games for low-end PCs.
  • Entry: most games at 1080p Medium; the RTX 5050 Laptop also at High. The 4 GB of the RTX 3050 Laptop and the 6 GB of the RTX 4050 Laptop are the weak point in newer games.
  • Mainstream: 1080p High in almost every game, and 1440p High in more than half of them.
  • Upper and top: 1440p High in most games; the top tier also handles high refresh rates.

Older chips are in the same ranking: an RTX 3060 Laptop sits between the RTX 4050 and 5050 Laptop, an RTX 3070 Laptop next to the RTX 4060 Laptop.

Power limit (TGP): why the same chip runs at different speeds

Every laptop maker sets how much power the graphics chip may use, its TGP. The same RTX 4060 Laptop can be allowed anything from 35 W to 140 W (with Dynamic Boost), and it runs much slower at the bottom of that range. From the laptop reviews in our data:

Laptop graphicsTGP rangeSpeed at the lowest TGP vs the typical one
RTX 4050 Laptop35–140 Wabout 29% slower
RTX 4060 Laptop35–140 Wabout 30% slower
RTX 4070 Laptop35–140 Wabout 33% slower
RTX 5060 Laptop45–115 Wabout 23% slower
RTX 5070 Laptop50–115 Wabout 22% slower

That's why a thin RTX 4070 Laptop at its lowest power can be slower than a thick RTX 4060 Laptop at full power: at typical power the RTX 4070 Laptop is only about 12% faster to begin with. Check the TGP in the laptop's specs or the review before you buy, and play plugged in: on battery, most laptops cut the graphics power. How far behind desktop cards are laptop GPUs?

The same name doesn't mean the same speed. The 1080p gap between each laptop chip (at its typical TGP) and the desktop card with that name:

Laptop graphicsDesktop cardLaptop is slower by
RTX 4060 LaptopRTX 4060about 9%
RTX 5060 LaptopRTX 5060about 16%
RTX 5070 LaptopRTX 5070about 31%
RTX 4070 LaptopRTX 4070about 34%
RTX 5070 Ti LaptopRTX 5070 Tiabout 28%
RTX 4080 LaptopRTX 4080about 30%
RTX 4090 LaptopRTX 4090about 28%
RTX 5080 LaptopRTX 5080about 18%

The pattern: the RTX 4060 and 5060 Laptop are close to their desktop versions, because the desktop cards use little more power than the laptop chips. From the 70 class up the gap is 18–34%: desktop cards draw 200 W and more, while laptop chips stop at about 175 W. If you're choosing between a laptop and a desktop, see gaming laptop or gaming PC.

Video memory on laptops

Laptop chips often have less video memory than desktop cards with the same name: the RTX 5070 Laptop has 8 GB (the desktop RTX 5070 has 12 GB), the RTX 4050 Laptop 6 GB. 8 GB is fine at 1080p High in almost every game; with 6 GB or less, use Medium textures in newer games. More in how much VRAM you need.

So, is your laptop good for gaming?

  • No dedicated graphics, older Intel UHD or Iris Xe: light games only. Check the games for low-end PCs.
  • Radeon 780M, 890M or Arc 140V: esports and lighter games at 1080p Low to Medium; most big new games stay below 60 FPS.
  • RTX 3050, 4050 or 5050 Laptop: a real gaming laptop for 1080p Medium.
  • RTX 4060, 4070 or 5060 Laptop: 1080p High in almost everything.
  • RTX 5070 Laptop and above: 1440p and high refresh rates.

For any game, pick your laptop graphics in the FPS calculator or open the game's page: each one has an "On gaming laptops" table.

FAQ

Is an RTX 4050 Laptop good for gaming?

Yes, for 1080p. It runs 146 of our 210 games at 60+ FPS at 1080p Medium and 126 at High at its typical 100 W. Its 6 GB of video memory means lower textures in some newer games.

Is the RTX 4060 Laptop as fast as the desktop RTX 4060?

Close: about 9% slower at 1080p at its typical 115 W, in our data. At low power limits it can be about 30% slower.

Is a laptop with integrated graphics good for gaming?

For light games, yes. A Radeon 780M runs esports games and older titles well at 1080p Low to Medium, but most new big games need lower resolutions or a dedicated graphics chip.

What is TGP on a gaming laptop?

TGP is the power the laptop maker lets the graphics chip use, in watts. A higher TGP means more speed for the same chip: an RTX 4060 Laptop can run about 30% slower at 35 W than at its typical 115 W.

Is the RTX 4070 Laptop much faster than the RTX 4060 Laptop?

Not much: about 12% at the same power limit in our data, and both have 8 GB of video memory. A low-power RTX 4070 Laptop can even be slower than a full-power RTX 4060 Laptop.
