Our picks explained
Best overall: Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Its extra "3D V-Cache" makes it the fastest processor in most games, often by a wide margin in esports titles and simulation games. The newer Ryzen 7 9850X3D is only a few percent faster and uses more power, so the 9800X3D is the better buy.
Best high-end: Ryzen 9 9950X3D. About the same gaming speed as the 9800X3D (within about 2%) plus twice the cores for video editing, streaming and 3D work. Only worth it if you need that extra work performance.
Best mid-range: Core Ultra 5 250K Plus. Part of Intel's 2026 "Arrow Lake Refresh", it offers excellent value for gaming and is very strong in everyday multitasking. Its LGA 1851 socket is not expected to get new processors, so plan to keep it for the life of the PC.
Best AM5 value: Ryzen 5 9600X. Six fast cores that handle almost every game well. The AM5 socket is expected to support future AMD processors, so you can upgrade the processor later without a new motherboard.
Best AM4 upgrade: Ryzen 7 5700X3D. If you already have an AM4 motherboard (Ryzen 1000 to 5000 era), this drop-in upgrade gives a big jump in games without replacing the board or the DDR4 RAM. Update the motherboard BIOS first.
Best budget: Ryzen 5 5500. Cheap, efficient and good enough for 60 FPS in most games with a mid-range graphics card. It uses an AM4 board and DDR4 RAM, which keeps the whole build cheaper.
No graphics card yet: Ryzen 7 8700G. Its built-in Radeon 780M graphics run esports games and older titles at 1080p Low to Medium, so you can game now and add a graphics card later.
How much processor do you need?
| Your graphics card | Processor that won't hold it back much |
|---|---|
| Entry level (RTX 3050, RX 6500 XT, Arc A380) | Ryzen 5 5500, Core i3-12100F or better |
| Mid-range (RTX 4060 / 5060, RX 7600 / 9060 XT, Arc B580) | Ryzen 5 5600, Core i5-12400F, Ryzen 5 9600X |
| Upper mid-range (RTX 5070, RX 9070) | Ryzen 5 9600X, Core Ultra 5 250K Plus, Ryzen 7 5700X3D |
| High end (RTX 5080 and above) | Ryzen 7 9800X3D |
At 1440p and 4K the graphics card does more of the work, so a mid-range processor is fine with a fast card. At 1080p with a high-refresh monitor, the processor matters much more. Check your exact pair in the bottleneck calculator.
Things to check before you buy
- Socket and motherboard. AM4 processors need an AM4 board, AM5 needs AM5, and Intel Core Ultra 200S needs LGA 1851. They are not interchangeable.
- RAM type. AM4 uses DDR4; AM5 and LGA 1851 use DDR5. Memory prices rose sharply in 2026, so a DDR4 (AM4) build can save a lot on a budget. See how much RAM you need.
- Cooler. Some processors come without a cooler in the box. Budget for one, especially for the X3D chips and Intel K models.
- What's next. New Intel and AMD desktop generations are not expected before around early 2027, so 2026 processors are a safe buy.
